Bag Filter vs Cartridge Filter Selection Guide

Compare bag and cartridge filtration by contaminant load, retention target, pressure drop, media area, maintenance and total operating duty.

Scope

General engineering guidance only. Final equipment selection, safety controls and operating procedures must be approved for the actual project.

1. Start with the contaminant load

Bag filtration is often the more practical starting route when suspended-solids loading and dirt-holding capacity dominate. Cartridge filtration is generally considered after the solids burden is controlled and finer, repeatable retention is required. Particle size alone does not decide the route; concentration, shape, compressibility and batch variation also matter.

2. Compare the operating objective

DecisionBag routeCartridge route
Primary objectiveGeneral clarification and solids holdingFine polishing or a controlled final barrier
Incoming solidsOften better suited to higher loadingPreferably low to moderate or prefiltered
Media geometryBag size, area, ring and seamLength, diameter, end fitting and effective area
Change-out decisionBag capacity and terminal differential pressureCartridge area, fouling and terminal differential pressure

3. Treat staged filtration as one system

A bag stage upstream of a cartridge stage may protect the finer media, but a second stage should only be added when inlet variability and total pressure loss support it. Confirm the target at each stage, available inlet pressure, clean and terminal differential pressure, and how simultaneous change-out affects production.

4. Verify materials and interfaces

Housing material, seal, media polymer, support hardware and connection standard must be reviewed against the process and cleaning chemistry. For cartridges, confirm length and end fitting. For bags, confirm size, ring, seam and basket compatibility.
