Product overview

Contained filtration for demanding process liquids

A candle filter places multiple vertical filter elements inside a closed pressure vessel. Solids are retained on the outside of the elements while filtrate is collected through the internal candle passages.

The filtration layer may be formed directly by the process solids or supported by a precoat/body-feed aid such as diatomaceous earth, depending on the application. Final vessel geometry, candle construction, discharge method and automation are selected from the actual process duty.

Operating sequence

How candle filtration is typically arranged

The sequence is adapted to the medium, solids, recovery target and cleaning method. Not every project uses every step.

01

Fill or precoat

Fill the closed vessel and, when required, establish a stable filter-aid layer on the candle surfaces.

02

Filter and build cake

Liquid passes through the filtration layer and candles while retained solids form a cake on the outside.

03

Recover and drain

Residual product may be displaced or recovered before the vessel is drained, subject to the process design.

04

Release the cake

Backblow, vibration, sluicing or another selected method releases the cake for contained discharge and cleaning.

Inside the vessel

Candle elements and internal arrangement

The element support, surface media, connection and spacing must match the solids, temperature, chemistry and cake-release method.

Application routes

Where candle filters are considered

Candle filtration is most valuable when a closed process, cake formation, product recovery or controlled solids discharge matters.

01

Palm oil & edible oil

Clarification and removal of bleaching earth, activated carbon or other process solids.

02

Chemical & oleochemical

Contained filtration of process liquids where material compatibility and recovery are important.

03

Food & beverage

Clarification duties for syrups, beverages and process ingredients subject to sanitary review.

04

Industrial liquids

Fine clarification, catalyst or carbon removal and selected product-recovery applications.

RFQ checklist

Send the process duty, not an assumed model

Candle filters are configured around the filtration cycle. Representative test data is especially useful for difficult products.

MediumLiquid composition, viscosity and product sensitivity
SolidsType, concentration, particle character and expected cake
Filtration targetRequired clarity, recovery objective and downstream protection
Operating envelopeBatch volume or flow, pressure, temperature and cycle time
Filter aidPrecoat/body-feed practice and grade, if already established
ConstructionWetted material, seals, connections, controls and installation limits

Final filtration area, vessel dimensions and operating sequence are confirmed by quotation and approved drawing.
