Flow, Viscosity and Pressure Drop in Filter Selection

Understand how actual flow, operating viscosity, clean differential pressure, terminal pressure drop and fouling influence industrial filter sizing.

General engineering guidance only. Final equipment selection, safety controls and operating procedures must be approved for the actual project.

1. Use the operating viscosity

Viscosity changes with temperature and composition. A filter sized from a water-like value can produce unacceptable pressure loss when the actual liquid is colder or more viscous. Provide the viscosity at normal and limiting operating temperatures, not only a product name.

2. Separate clean and terminal differential pressure

Clean differential pressure describes the new system at a stated flow and viscosity. Terminal differential pressure defines the point where media is changed, cleaning begins or the process can no longer maintain duty. Both values are needed to estimate usable operating margin.

4. Include fouling behavior

Two liquids with the same viscosity and particle size can foul media differently. Solids concentration, shape, compressibility and adhesion affect pressure rise and cleaning response. Where duty is critical, current-equipment data or representative testing is more reliable than a catalogue flow number.
