Single-Bag vs Multi-Bag Filter Guide

Compare single-bag and multi-bag filter housings by hydraulic duty, solids capacity, footprint, isolation, maintenance access and change-out planning.

Scope

General engineering guidance only. Final equipment selection, safety controls and operating procedures must be approved for the actual project.

1. Do not choose from flow alone

A multi-bag housing provides more parallel media area, but the useful choice depends on viscosity, solids loading, allowable pressure drop and the required change-out interval. A single-bag housing can be the better result where the flow is modest, access is constrained or multiple smaller units support the operating plan.

2. Compare the complete operating arrangement

DecisionSingle-bagMulti-bag
Filtration areaOne bag per housingMultiple bags in one vessel
Service eventSmaller individual change-outMore media changed per vessel opening
Footprint strategyCompact unit or parallel housingsConsolidated capacity in one vessel
ContinuityRequires planned shutdown or parallel isolationStill requires vessel isolation unless a duplex arrangement is used

3. Confirm maintenance access

Check cover opening envelope, bag lifting height, wet-bag handling, drain routing, platform needs and the safe mass of retained solids. A compact vessel can still be difficult to service if piping, walls or overhead structure block access.

4. Size from a real duty point

Provide normal and peak flow, viscosity at temperature, inlet pressure, target retention, solids loading, clean pressure drop and terminal pressure drop. JINLV can then compare one larger vessel with parallel smaller vessels without assuming that either arrangement is always preferable.
